PE

Intent

At Coppice Academy, we aim to provide a high-quality Physical Education (PE) curriculum that inspires all our pupils to lead active, healthy lifestyles. We believe that PE is an essential part of our curriculum, which supports the physical, emotional, and social development of our pupils. We aim to develop pupils’ physical skills and abilities while nurturing positive attitudes towards physical activity and competition, encouraging pupils to take ownership of their health and wellbeing.

Implementation
Pupils have at least 2 hours of PE a week. PE is taught by class teachers using the real PE scheme and specialist sports coaches from Sport Development UK. This provides a holistic PE curriculum that addresses the needs of all pupils through a balance of physical activities: gymnastics, dance, games, and swimming.

We deliver high-quality PE lessons, where teachers and specialist sports coaches use questioning, assessment, and feedback to identify and address pupils’ needs and provide opportunities for pupils to work collaboratively, enhancing social and emotional skills.
Pupils are supported to achieve their full potential, identifying and nurturing talents through regular assessment and challenging pupils who are capable of performing at a higher level with extra-curricular provision, such as lunchtime and after-school clubs. We provide individualised assessment, where pupils are given frequent feedback and guidance from teachers to help them identify their strengths and areas for improvement.

Healthy lifestyles are promoted beyond the curriculum, through the Daily Mile and encouraging pupils and their families to engage with physical activity in the local community.

Impact

We believe our strategy for delivering an outstanding PE curriculum has a significant impact on our pupils' development and wellbeing. Our pupils leave Coppice Academy with improved physical fitness and confidence, enabling pupils to engage in a range of activities and sports confidently. They have a clear understanding of healthy lifestyles and the importance of physical activity in maintaining long-term cognitive, physical and mental wellbeing. Pupils have a positive attitude towards competition and collaboration, reflecting the school’s values and ethos with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in different careers and sporting activities.
